The problem with water-first formulas
Scan the back of almost any conventional moisturiser, serum or lotion and you will find "Aqua" listed as the very first ingredient — meaning it makes up the largest proportion of the product by weight. Water is inexpensive, blends readily with other ingredients, and is considered safe. But it comes with a significant trade-off.
When water is the primary ingredient, everything else — the botanical extracts, the plant oils, the active compounds that actually transform your skin — is present in smaller concentrations. The water dilutes the formula. And because water-based products are ideal environments for bacteria and mould to grow, they require preservative systems to remain shelf-stable.
What waterless actually means
A waterless formula replaces water entirely with plant-derived alternatives: cold-pressed oils, butters, waxes, birch sap, flower waters, and concentrated botanical extracts that deliver hydration through the skin's own lipid matrix rather than adding water on top of it. The result is a product where every component is active — there is nothing in the formula that isn't doing real work on your skin.
This is true hydration: not the temporary surface sensation of water evaporating, but the lasting suppleness that comes from restoring the lipid barrier that holds moisture in from the inside out.

A sea buckthorn berry growing on exposed coastal dunes develops one of the highest omega-7 concentrations found in any plant on earth.
When these botanicals are cold-pressed and used as the base of a waterless formula, the result is a product of unusual potency — one that couldn't be achieved by suspending the same extracts in a water base. Nordic clean beauty brands have embraced the waterless approach not as a marketing decision, but as a logical expression of their ingredient philosophy: if the botanical is this exceptional, why dilute it?
How to use waterless products
Waterless products are typically richer in texture than their water-based counterparts. Apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing — before fully patting dry — to help the oils absorb smoothly. A small amount goes much further than with conventional formulas. Start with less than you think you need and build from there.
